You receive a .cdr from a client, double-click it and CorelDRAW answers with some variation of “cannot open the file” or “file format not supported”. The file is not corrupt, e-mail did not break anything and your license is fine. What happened is simpler: the file was saved in a newer version of CorelDRAW than yours.
The rule that never changed
CorelDRAW opens files from any version older than itself: an X6 file opens in 2024 without drama. The reverse has never worked. It is not a commercial lock: every new version introduces object types, effects and structures the previous one simply cannot interpret. Rather than open halfway and deliver a wrong drawing, the program reads the version number declared in the file, sees that it is higher than its own and stops there.
In practice this lands on production people. The designer upgrades to CorelDRAW 2025 the day it comes out; the machine at the print shop, the plotter or the screen printer stays on 2020, because it works, because the cutting plugin only runs there, or because nobody wants to touch what is in production.
How to find out which version the file is
You do not need to open the file to know: the information is declared inside it. Three routes:
- Drop the file on the versions page. The version is read in your browser, without uploading, and you do not have to convert anything if you do not want to.
- Ask whoever sent it. In CorelDRAW,
File ▸ Document Propertiesshows which version saved the file. - By the size of the damage. When the difference is a single version, rewriting the file usually works. When it is five, it is usually time to ask for another format.

What to do
In order of result quality:
- Ask for the file saved in your version. Whoever has the newer CorelDRAW does
File ▸ Save Asand picks the version in the “Version” box. Ten seconds, and the result is a legitimate file converted by the program itself. Always the best option. - Rewrite the version declared in the file. That is what the version converter does: the version number is swapped in the three places it appears inside the
.cdr, and your version agrees to open it. The drawing is not altered. Works well for one or two versions back; understand the method and its limits. - Ask for a PDF or EPS. If the goal is only to print or cut, a PDF with curves preserved does the job, and CorelDRAW imports it without complaining about versions.
What does not work: renaming the extension, “save as” in your own CorelDRAW (it would need to open the file first), or reinstalling the program. The block happens before the file is actually read.
When even rewriting does not help
Rewriting the version makes CorelDRAW agree to open, but does not undo what the newer version created. If the drawing uses a fill, a shadow or an effect that only exists from the newer version on, the older program may open the file and still warn that it did not understand a given object, or draw it differently. The larger the distance between versions, the more likely that becomes.
At that point a thirty-second conversation with whoever sent the file is worth more than half an hour of forcing it. A Save As in the right version, at the source, solves the problem at the root.
